Keep Your Car And Home Safe From Halloween Vandalism

TP house

While you may be doling out treats, others may be preparing to give you a mean trick. On Halloween night, automotive vandalism rates double compared to any other night of the year. In order to keep your home and car safe from vandalism, here are some tips.

Park in the garage

Over two thirds of the insurance market was surveyed in from 2008 to 2012 and reported 1,253 automotive vandalism claims on Halloween. That’s more than double the daily claim average for car vandalism.

In order to keep your car safer, keep it locked up in the garage over night. If you don’t have that ability, then park it under a bright light and in a very public setting to discourage vandals from smashing windows or slashing your tires. If your car is tucked away in a secluded dark corner, it’s much more likely to be vandalized.

Set your alarms

Often times, car alarms go unnoticed in busy parking lots. However, if your car or house alarm goes off in the middle of the night, it’s sure to do its job and scare away thieves or vandals. Make sure you have your car and house alarm set and ready for the worst vandalism night of the year.

Turn on motion sensing lights

Motion sensing lights are a great way to deter burglars and vandals. You can purchase some battery operated motion sensing lights from the hardware store to temporarily safeguard your yard. Or, consider making the switch permanently for added security all year long.

Get home and auto insurance to protect you from the worst.

Install a video camera

It won’t be fun if you are victimized on Halloween by vandals, but if you can catch them in the act, you’ll have your own revenge to take to the police. There are so many affordable and tiny video cameras these days. Set some up on your window sills to monitor your car and yard in case someone tries to do something nasty on Halloween.

Bring your jack-o-lanterns in

Smashing pumpkins is a prankster’s go-to, but if you blow out the candles and bring yours inside before closing up for the night, you won’t wake to broken pumpkin guts all over your sidewalk.

Remove your mailbox

Vandals have been known to drive by with baseball bats and smash mailboxes off of their posts. If you have a mailbox on the side of the road, you might want to consider taking it down for a night to be on the safe side.
