Some once-popular things have gone out of style, but one measure of popularity that never gets old is something called “market share.” This index shows the percentage of customers a company has compared to competitors in a region. Why it’s important for you is because it gives a wider perspective on a company.

We’ll show you how. Take Progressive for example. They insure 15% of all drivers in North Dakota—leading the state for most customers. They’re not the cheapest option though. North Dakota Farm Bureau offers premiums for more than $100 less a year than them, but they’re still the most popular car insurance company.

Other cheap options like North Star—the state’s 3rd cheapest option—didn’t even make the list for popular companies. This can tell you that cost isn’t all that goes into the equation when picking a company. Paying more for an insurance policy might get you better insurance coverage and customer service.

Just keep all of this in mind while shopping for car insurance so you have more insight into why customers are flocking to certain carriers.

Are there many customer complaints?

Feel like you’re wasting your breath when you complain about a company? You’re not. All of those issues go into a “complaint index” which logs the percentage of customers who have had a negative experience with their insurance company. As you’re looking at this chart, know that lower numbers mean less complaints and higher number mean more unsatisfied customers. Allied, Nationwide, and MetLife are just a few of the top companies that have the least amount of complaints.

If you’re looking for an all-around affordable car insurance carrier, take this into account before you make a choice. If less customers complain, you’ll have better chances of being happy with the service too.

Our recommendation

We want you to do the thinking here. Our job is just to lead you in the right direction by giving you complete and simple information that you need to do so. The only thing we advise you to do is make sure the company you go with ranks well across multiple categories. If they’re popular among customers (market share), have reasonable insurance premiums, and low complain indexes, they’re probably a safe bet. For instance, State Farm ranks in the top 10 for all three categories. Progressive ranks in the top 10 for pricing and market share.
